I have been building web applications with React for several years. In that time, I have shipped production apps, rebuilt legacy codebases, onboarded junior developers, and spent more hours than I care to admit debugging state management issues at midnight. I have also, more recently, spent real time working with other frameworks, not as experiments, but on actual projects with actual deadlines. And so when developers ask me whether React is still the best choice, I no longer give them the quick yes I used to.There’s no direct answer to this. React dominates every measurable standard – job postings, GitHub activity, ecosystem size, and community support. But dominance and being the best choice for your specific project are two different things. The frontend landscape has shifted considerably, and the frameworks competing with React today are mature, thoughtfully designed tools with real advantages in specific contexts. Knowing where those advantages apply is what separates developers who make good architectural decisions from those who just reach for whatever they already know.What React Gets Genuinely Right?Before getting into where React struggles, it is worth being clear about what it actually does well. React’s component model is genuinely good. The idea of breaking a UI into discrete, composable pieces that manage their own logic and rendering has proven durable across years of changing best practices. It maps cleanly onto how large teams think about dividing work, and it scales in a way that few alternative mental models have matched.The ecosystem is also a real advantage, not just a talking point. When you work in React, almost every problem you encounter has already been solved by someone else, documented, and published as a library. Authentication flows, form handling, data fetching patterns, animation, the solutions exist, they are maintained, and there are enough Stack Overflow answers and blog posts that a developer at almost any experience level can get unstuck quickly. That matters enormously on real projects where time and team capability vary.Furthermore, React’s hiring market is still unmatched. If you are building a team, React gives you the largest pool of experienced developers to draw from. That practical consideration often outweighs theoretical performance differences, especially for companies that need to move fast and cannot afford to train every new hire on a less common framework from scratch.Where React Started Showing Its Age?That said, working with React daily also means living with its frustrations. The framework carries significant historical weight. Decisions made years ago, when the web was a different place and the problems being solved were different, still shape the developer experience today. The mental overhead of managing renders, understanding when and why components re-render, and making sure state updates behave the way you expect them to is genuinely high, higher than it needs to be for many common use cases.I have watched developers new to React spend weeks developing intuitions about the rendering model that should not take weeks. The concepts are learnable, but the learning curve is steeper than React’s reputation as approachable would suggest. And because the ecosystem has evolved faster than the framework’s core, there are multiple competing patterns for solving the same problems, state management being the clearest example, which creates genuine confusion about the right approach in a given situation.Performance is another area where React requires deliberate effort. Out of the box, a React application does not automatically optimize for minimal re-rendering. Achieving good performance at scale requires understanding memoization, knowing when to split components, and making conscious decisions about data flow. None of that is insurmountable, but it means performance is something you manage rather than something the framework handles for you by default.What the Alternatives Actually Offer?The most significant shift in my thinking came from spending real time with Vue and Svelte on production projects. Both changed what I expected from a frontend framework, and not in ways I anticipated going in.Vue’s design philosophy centers on progressive adoption and a gentler learning curve. Its template syntax keeps HTML, CSS, and JavaScript close to their native forms, which means developers without deep JavaScript backgrounds can contribute meaningfully much sooner. On a project where the team included developers with a backend-heavy background, that accessibility translated into faster onboarding and fewer mistakes caused by misunderstandings of the framework. Vue’s reactivity system is also more intuitive for many developers, as changes to data update the UI without requiring explicit state management decisions at every turn.Svelte takes a fundamentally different approach. Rather than running a virtual DOM diffing process in the browser, it compiles components into efficient imperative JavaScript at build time. The result is smaller bundle sizes and faster runtime performance by default, without the developer needing to do anything special to achieve it. Writing Svelte also feels lighter, less boilerplate, less ceremony, and more direct expression of what you want the UI to do. For smaller applications and teams who want performance without the overhead of React’s optimization patterns, Svelte is a genuinely compelling alternative rather than just an interesting experiment.Angular occupies a different position in this comparison. It is a full framework rather than a library, which means it makes more decisions for you, routing, forms, HTTP handling, and dependency injection all come built in and opinionated. For large enterprise teams where consistency and standardization matter more than flexibility, that structure is a genuine advantage. Angular projects tend to look similar regardless of who wrote them, which simplifies code reviews and reduces the cognitive load of moving between parts of a large codebase. The tradeoff is verbosity and a steeper initial setup cost that React and the lighter alternatives do not carry.The Question Nobody is Asking:After working across these frameworks, the question I now ask first is not which framework is best; it is what this specific project actually needs. That reframing changes the analysis considerably.A large, long-lived application with a big team and complex state requirements? React’s ecosystem depth and the availability of experienced developers make it a strong choice.A content-heavy site where performance and bundle size matter, and the team is small? Svelte’s compiled output and minimal runtime overhead start to look very attractive.A project where the team includes developers who are strong in general web skills but less experienced with JavaScript-heavy frameworks? Vue’s approachability reduces the ramp-up time in ways that have real project timeline implications.The mistake I made for years, and that I see many developers still making, is treating the framework decision as a one-time philosophical commitment rather than a contextual engineering choice. React is not the best framework, just as a hammer is not the best tool. It is the best framework for certain kinds of problems, on certain kinds of teams, under certain kinds of constraints. When those conditions are met, it is hard to beat. When they are not, there are real alternatives worth taking seriously.Where I Actually Land on This?React is still my default starting point for most projects, and I do not expect that to change soon. The ecosystem, the hiring market, and the sheer volume of solved problems make it the path of least resistance in most professional contexts. But it is no longer my unexamined default. Before reaching for it, I now spend a few minutes honestly assessing the project’s requirements, the team’s background, and the performance constraints involved.What the last few years have taught me is that the question of which framework is best is less interesting than the question of which framework is right for this. The developers I have seen make the best architectural decisions are not the ones most loyal to a particular tool. They are the ones who understand the tradeoffs clearly enough to make a deliberate choice and explain it to someone else. That kind of judgment is worth more than any framework preference.React is still excellent. So, in the right contexts, are its competitors.
